Mistake: Aspiration
I keep aspiring consonants that don’t need it, like བཞས་གཏོང་མཁན་ I pronounce གཏོང་ like གཐོང་
How to … with སྟངས་ instead of གང་འདྲས་
When translating sentences that use how I tend to associate it with the question word གང་འདྲས་ but sometimes སྟངས་ can be used:
འཐེན་ཐུག་བཟོ་སྟངས་སྦྱངས་དགོས་ཡོད། I need to learn how to make thenthuk.
Using རང་ Informally
Instead of ཁྱེད་རང་ sometimes simply རང་ is used colloquially, for instance when saying
Oh! You have arrived! ཨོ། རང་བསླེབས་སོང་ག
Knowing Places and People
ཧ་གོ་བ། can be used for both, and ངོ་ཤེས་པ། for people only (ངོ་ is face, so it makes sense).
ཀོ་པན་ཧ་གོ་ཡི་ཡོད་པས། Do you know Kopan?
བསྟན་འཛིན་ཧ་གོ་གི་ཡོད་པས། Do you know Tenzin?
བསྟན་འཛིན་ངོ་ཤེས་ཀྱི་ཡོད་པས། Do you know Tenzin?
Liking Now & Generally
I heard another way to say “He likes X”, which used the verb form དགའ་པོ་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཡོད་རེད། instead of དགའ་པོ་ཡོད་རེད།. We use the former when it’s more linked to the present tense and the latter when it’s more general, timeless.
