Many a times this question keeps popping to my mind:
Why in བདུན་ཕྲག་གཉིས་གི་རྗེས་ལ་ངས་སྦྱོར་ཀློག་རྒྱག་ཤེས་བྱུང་། we say རྗེས་ལ་ instead of རྗེས་མ་ལ་ or རྗེ་མར་?
With my tutor at SINI he made it sound very clear: རྗེས་ means after, and རྗེས་མ་ means later, or following (upcoming).
So if you want to say ==“after X {time units}”==:
{time units}+ འབྲལ་སྒྲ་ (གི་) + རྗེས་ + ལ་“After one week” (it’s better to specify when it’s one with གཅིག་) བདུན་ཕྲག་གཅིག་གི་རྗེས་ལ་
And if you want to say ==“within the following X {time units}”==
{time units}+ རྗེས་མ་ + ལ་“Next week” (lit. later week) བདུན་ཕྲག་རྗེས་མ་
Contraction
ལ་དོན་ can be contracted: རྗེས་མ་ལ་ → རྗེས་མར་
Also it can be used without time units:
“I will do self-study later” རྗེས་མ་ལ་ང་རང་སྦྱོང་བྱེད་གི་ཡོད།
