There are three popular tibetan script categories:

  • U-chan (དབུ་ཅན) (with head)
  • U-me (དབུ་མེད) (headless)

Within བདུ་མེད། there are more sub-script types:

  • ཚུག་རིང་། (long form, slow calligraphy)
  • ཚུག་ཐུང་། (short form, suitable for handwriting)
  • འཁྱུག་ཡིག (fast letters, punctuation blends)

For Sanskrit mantras very often the Ranjana Script (Lantsa) is used.

Check Pentsok’s Email on Calligraphy Practice. He gave a very nice talk The Evolution and Great Diversity of Tibetan Scripts and afterwards provided advice on how to progress through.
