Those are my personal distilled notes on the great work done on colloquial Tibetan by Franziska Oertle and the SINI Sarnath International Nyingma Institute. They are not revised by teachers and might confuse you unless you are familiarized with the course material. I recommend you to not use these notes independently unless you have been exposed to the material before.

Direct Reported Speech
Speaker + AP + {person addressed} + ལ་ + {quote} + ཟེ + to say, to hear (e.g. གསུང་སོང།)
ཨ་མས་ ཕྲུ་གུ་ཚོ་ ལ་ ང་ལམ་སང་ཡོང་གི་ཡིན་ ཟེ་ གསུང་སོང་།
Mother + AP kids to “I’ll come immediately” she said.
ཟེ་
ཞེས། ཅེས། ཤེས། in literary
INFO
The ཟེ་ doesn’t pronounce really the e when spoken, but since in Tibetan there’s no way to write a consonant that doesn’t sound with a vowel, it’s as close as we can get.
Reporting Verbs
Instead of saying said, or told, we can use any verb that expresses communication, really:
- replied ལེན་བརྒྱབ་སོང་།
- asked དྲིས་སོང་། (འདྲི་བ་དྲིས་སོང་། འདྲི་བ་གཏང་སོང་། བཀའ་འདྲི་གསུང་སོང་།)
- …
Humilific “Told Me”
གསུང་ is the honorific for ལབ་ and the humilific is ཞུས་
To Me
If it’s oneself the recipient of the information then both are correct:
- ང་ལ་
- བྱུང་
Imperatives
When reporting imperatives, it’s always direct reported speech.
རྒན་ལགས་ཀྱི་སློབ་ཕྲུག་ཚོ་ལ་ དུས་ཚོད་ཏག་ཏག་ཕེབས་རོགས་གནང་ ཟེ་གསུང་སོང།
Or using must: ་་་ཕེབས་དགོས་རེད་ ཟེ་གསུང་སོང།
Indirect Reported Speech
Rule
✅ Change the pronoun
❌ Don’t change the verb or auxiliary
Dolma says: ༼ ང་ སང་ཉིན་གསུང་ཚོས་ལ་ འགྲོ་གི་ཡིན། ༽
When I report I say: “Dolma told me she will go to the Dharma talk tomorrow”:
སྒྲོལ་མས་ (ཁོང་) སང་ཉིན་གསུང་ཆོས་ལ་ འགྲོ་གི་ཡིན་ ཟེ་གསུང་བྱུང་།
སྒྲོལ་མ tells me: ༼ བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཉམ་ཆུང་རེད། ༽
I report to བཀྲ་ཤིས: སྒྲོལ་མས་ ཁྱེད་རང་ ཉམ་ཆུང་རེད་ ཟེ་གསུང་སོང་།
I am Ramon. བཀྲ་ཤིས་ says to my mother: “Ramon བོད་འགྲོ་ཡག་རེད།”
I report: བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཀྱིས་ ངའི་ཨ་མ་ལགས་ལ་ ང་བོད་འགྲོ་ཡག་རེད་ ལབ་སོང་།
Skipping Pronoun
If the speaker says something about himself / herself, there’s no need to repeat the pronoun.
My friend tells me: ༼ ང་ རྩས་པའི་ལས་ཀ་ བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཡིན། ༽
ངའི་གྲོགས་པས་ ང་ལ་ (ཁོང་) ལོ་རྗེས་མར རྩས་པའི་ལས་ཀ་ བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཡིན་ ཟེ་ལབ་སོང་།
Honorific
If you are reporting your own action, you can use humilific ཞུ་བ། instead of regular ལབ་པ།
ངས་ཁོང་གི་ལས་ཀ་ལས་འགན་ཆེན་པོ་གཅིག་རེད་ཟེ་ཞུས་པ་ཡིན།
ང་ རྒན་ལགས་ལ་ ཁྱེད་རང་སང་ཉིན་འཛིན་གྲྭ་ལ་ཕེབས་ཐུབ་ཀྱི་མ་རེད་ ཟེ་ཞུ་གི་ཡིན།
Reporting Honorific
When oneself is involved, it’s good to wrap the verbs if you would produce a sentence where you’d be addressed in honorific.
Doctor says: ཁྱེད་རང་གྱི་གསལ་སྨན་དེ་ཚོ་ཏག་པོ་མཆོད་ན་སྙུང་གཞི་དྲྭངས་ཀྱི་རེད།
I report: ཨེམ་ཆི་ལགས་ཀྱིས་ ངས་སྨན་དེ་ཚོ་ཡག་པོ་བཟས་ན་ན་ཚ་དྲག་གི་རེད་ཟེ་གསུང་བྱུང་།
Similarly on the other end, when reporting what a highly respected person said about him or herself we use Honorific when describing what he or she said. It’s therefore a tricky and strange because it looks like they used honorific for themselves:
རིན་པོ་ཆེས་ལམ་སང་ཚུར་ཕེབས་ཀྱི་ཡིན་ཟེ་གསུང་སོང་།
ཟ་
ཟེ་ལབ་ཀྱི་འདུག
Same as ཟེ་ལབ
ཤྭ་ཁྲ་སྐེ་རིང་ལགས་ཀྱིས་ཁོང་གསར་འགོད་པ་རེད་ཟེ་ཀྱི་འདུག
ཤྭ་ཁྲ་སྐེ་རིང་ལགས་ཀྱིས་ཁོང་གསར་འགོད་པ་རེད་ཟ།
I Heard, It Is Said That …
If you don’t use བྱུང་ nor ང་ལ་ then the sentence was not directed to you but instead you just heard it.
ཁོང་ཨེམ་ཆི་ཡག་པོ་རེད་ཟ། They say he is a good doctor.
Reporting Long Sentences
If you want to have the ་་་ཟེ་ལབ་སོང་། at the end you could say:
ཁོང་གིས་འདི་འདྲས་གསུངས་སོང་། + sentence.
ཁོང་གིས་ག་རེ་གསུངས་སོང་ཟེར་ན། + sentence.
Reporting Reports
Getting recursive can get confusing.
Tashi-la says that I have said that I will go to the Tibetan store.
བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལགས་ཀྱི་ ཁོང་གིས་ (referring to me) ངས་བོད་པའི་ཚོང་ཁང་ལ་འགྲོ་གི་ཡིན་ཟེ་ལབ་པ་ཡིན་ ཟེ་གསུང་གི་འདུག
The ཁོང་ could be ambiguous, since it might refer to somebody else that is not necessarily me.
A better way would be to leverage Reporting Long Sentences:
བཀྲ་ཤིས་ལགས་ཀྱི་ ག་རེ་གསུང་གི་འདུག་ཟེར་ན་ ངས་བོད་པའི་ཚོང་ཁང་ལ་འགྲོ་གི་ཡིན་ཟེ་ལབ་པ་ཡིན་ ཟེ་གསུང་གི་འདུག
Future Reports
Tomorrow if I go to the shop I will tell the shop owner this tsampa is good.
སང་ཉིན་ཚོང་ཁང་ལ་འགྲོ་ན་ ངས་ཚོང་དཔོན་ལགས་ལ་ ཁོང་གི་རྩམ་པ་འདི་ཞིམ་པོ་འདུག་ཟེ་ལབ་ཀྱི་ཡིན།
In one month you will probably tell me you have learned this lesson well
ཟླ་བ་གཅིག་གི་རྗེས་ལ་ ཁྱེད་རང་གིས་ ང་ལ་ ང་སློབ་ཚན་འདི་ཡག་པོ་སྦྱངས་འདུག་ ཟེ་གསུངས་ཡག་ཡིན་ས་རེད།
